The 16-year old Judel Tabsing describes himself as a hardworking person, determined, persistent and courageous in discovering new things. In 2012, Judel became the Regional Science Fair Champion, landing top 3 in Life Science Category, Cluster II (Science Schools). In the same year, he received the Ricoh Sustainable Development Award during the National Science and Technology Fair.
Judel’s most recent achievement is winning the
fourth award in the plant sciences: agriculture and agronomy category at the
recently concluded Intel Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF) 2013. He was
awarded $500.00 for his project entitled ‘impatiens balsamina leaf extract as
potential fungicide against fusariumoxysporum f. sp. cubense tropical race four
causing fusarium wilt of banana’. His study has great impact to the local banana
industry and to the environment, as it utilizes synthetic fungicides to create an
organic-based fungicide that is more affordable and environment-friendly.
Judel is the only son of Julie T. Tabsing, a public high school teacher and Edilita A. Tabsing, an Overseas Filipino Worker (OFW). Judel graduated from the Panabo National High School in Davao Oriental earlier this year and is a currently a college freshman pursuing a Bachelor of Science degree in Medical Laboratory Science at the San Pedro College in Davao.
