400 Students from Surigao Del Sur Get Poisoned After Eating Durian Candy

At least  400 people, mostly elementary students from Surigao Del Sur towns are now being hospitalized after being allegedly poisoned by candy on Friday.

This  was confirmed by Surigao Del Sur Gov. Johnny Pimental in Bombo Radyo.

Most of the victims were students from Cagwait, Lianga, San Agustin, Tago , Marihatag at Tandag City who bought durian and mangosteen-flavored candies “sold by unidentified vendors roaming in the area with an L-300 van.

Victims are vomiting and complaining of nausea, dizziness, stomach pain and headaches.
Quoted from CNN Philippines, Marcelinita Pareja,the administrative officer of the Surigao del Sur Health Office,said that they are looking at the possibility of poisonous substances in the candies that would result in the condition of the patients.

She added that the vendors sold the candies at a cheap price and individually, instead of by packs, to conceal the expiry date and distributor information.

An unconfirmed social media report says nine were already dead and the number of  victims closes to 1,000.

As of this posting authorities has already arrested 12 of the suspected vendors  who  came from Davao City.
