Iran Beats Gilas Pilipinas , 74-65 | Replay Schedule

Without Andre Blatche, Gilas Pilipinas suffered its second loss in the 37th William Jones Cup after I.R Iran, the reigning basketball Champion of Asia prevails with 74-65, in New Taipei City, Taiwan, Thursday afternoon.

The 7’2 center Haddadi, who played three seasons with the Memphis Grizzlies, put in a workmanlike double-double of 22 points, 14 rebounds, and 2 blocked shots as the defending FIBA Asia champions notched their fifth win against one loss. The big center was guarded by Asi Taulava, Sonny Thoss and Moala Tautuaa, but none of them had the height to contain him, says Sports 5 News

Meanwhile Hamed Afagh lit it up from the outside, hitting three triples on his way to 13 points. Mohammad Hassanzadeh repeatedly crashed the offensive glass and came up with key hustle plays. Overall Iran was the better rebounding team, 43-32, including a huge 19-7 edge in offensive rebounds which they translated into 14 second-chance points. Gilas also got into penalty situation early in each quarter as they were whistled for 27 fouls, a statistic that hardly pleased Coach Tab Baldwin after the game.

Iran and Russia are currently tied on top of the standings at 4-1 while Gilas Pilipinas is at third with a 3-1 slate. But the Filipinos hold the tiebreaker over the Russians after beating them on Tuesday, putting the Philippines in a good position for the title, Interaksyon report said.

The Philippines hasn’t beaten Iran for the past two years, most notably in their encounters in the FIBA Asia Championship finals in 2013 and the Asian Games in 2014.
